NEW YORK (AP) — Brad Ausmus was hired by the New York Yankees on Tuesday to replace Carlos Mendoza as bench coach for manager Aaron Boone. Now 54, Ausmus spent 2022 as the Oakland Athletics' bench coach for manager Bob Melvin. Mendoza had been the Yankees' bench coach for four seasons when he left on Nov. 13 to manage the New York Mets. NEW YORK, Oct 21 (Reuters) - New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said on Friday he is preaching consistency at the plate despite a demoralizing 0-2 start to the ALCS on the road against hated rivals Houston Astros. "Hopefully he can eliminate, hold them down and get us off to a good start, and then we can do enough offensively," Boone told reporters. The Yankees have their work cut out for them to reverse the momentum after the Astros threw 30 strikeouts through the first two games, an alarming statistic that Boone said was unacceptable. "And sometimes when you get so focused on, 'I'm going to go touch the ball', you start expanding the strike zone. And when you do that against a Houston Astro pitching staff you're in trouble and you're playing into their hands."

Cabrera's left arm sent Hicks tumbling face-first into foul territory and Hicks was lifted after walking gingerly in the outfield. Hicks was replaced by Marwin Gonzalez in left field. Hicks was in the starting lineup for the second straight game when the Yankees shifted Cabrera from left to shortstop to replace a struggling Kiner-Falefa. The Yankees defeated Cleveland 5-1 on Tuesday and will face the Houston Astros in the AL Championship Series.
